According to a two American And Korean studies published recently in JAMA, young adults who have elevated blood pressure before age 40 face significantly increased risk for cardiovascular events in middle age, .
In the American study, researchers studied nearly 5000 U.S. adults who had at least two BP measurements before age 40. During follow-up, 228 cardiovascular events occurred before age 60. After multivariable adjustment, participants with elevated BP, stage 1 hypertension, or stage 2 hypertension before age 40 had significantly increased risks for cardiovascular events compared with those who had normal BP until age 40. The risk rose with increasing BP levels, ranging from a 67% relative increase with elevated BP to a 249% relative increase with stage 2 hypertension. The authors concluded that the blood pressure classification in the 2017 ACC/AHA blood pressure guideline may help identify young adults at higher risk for cardiovascular disease even
In the cohort study of 2 488 101 Koreans aged 20 through 39 years, stage 1 hypertension was associated with an increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease . The authors concluded that young adults with stage 1 hypertension may be at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
